The Story Behind Nations Cup

The Nations Cup was born in response to a pivotal moment in Birmingham's history. In the summer of 2024, far-right riots swept the country. In Birmingham — a city that has always prided itself on its diversity — racial tensions rose and communities felt the strain.

Our response was football. We brought together 16 of Birmingham's most prominent communities — each represented by a team, each wearing their nation's colours. From every corner of our great city, with ethnic origins spanning the globe, Nations Cup became an emblem for unity, talent and a proud Birmingham.

When people think of Birmingham, they think of diversity. We decided to celebrate that — not hide from it.

Vesey, a kit provider on behalf of Nike, supplied 16 free kits for the tournament. Birmingham City Council funded the event. The response from the city was overwhelming — and this is just the beginning.

What Nations Cup Represents

Football brings people together in a way not much else can. Nations Cup harnesses that power deliberately — creating a space where communities that might never meet on the pitch come together, compete with pride, and leave with new connections.

Beyond the tournament itself, Nations Cup is a platform for discovering underrepresented talent across Birmingham's diverse communities. We believe the best footballers in Birmingham's South Asian, African, Caribbean and other communities deserve the same pathways as anyone else.

The Nations Cup is growing. We want it to lead to more work, more partnerships, and a permanent fixture in Birmingham's sporting calendar. Get in touch if you want to be involved.
