The Programme

Care Leavers Football is a joint initiative between Birmingham United Foundation and Birmingham Children’s Trust, designed specifically for care experienced young people — those who have now left the care system and are navigating life independently.

Leaving care can be one of the most isolating transitions a young person faces. Overnight, the structures and support that surrounded them disappear. Football gives these young people a reason to show up, a team to belong to, and a community that is genuinely glad to see them.

Football provides what so many care leavers are searching for — a sense of belonging and a place they are truly welcome.

We run regular football sessions specifically for care leavers, providing a consistent, safe and enjoyable space for physical activity, social connection and personal development.

Why It Matters

Social Connection

Many care leavers face profound social isolation. Our sessions bring young people together regularly, building friendships and genuine peer networks in a relaxed environment.

Physical Activity

Regular physical activity is essential for mental and physical health. We make sport accessible and enjoyable for young people who face barriers to participation.

Sense of Belonging

Being part of a team — having a coach who knows your name, teammates who expect to see you — creates the identity and belonging that care leavers often lack.

Trusted Adults

Our coaches build genuine relationships with participants over time. For many care leavers, having a consistent, trusted adult in their corner makes a real difference.

The Care Leavers Cup

Every year we pthe Care Leavers Cup — an annual football tournament celebrating care experienced young people and bringing the community together for a day of football, competition and connection.
